Conservation Concern: Silky sharks are oceanic predators that travel the vast open waterways of our planet, often in large, polarized schools, observed at submerged seamounts or under floating debris. Unfortunately, their pelagic, social nature and tendency to associate with and feed on tuna exposes them to intensive commercial fishing practices such as purse seine and pelagic longline fisheries. In a recent meta-analysis of global shark bycatch the silky shark was recorded as the second highest species with an estimated 80-90% mortality in purse seine fisheries and a reported 2 million individuals landed per year. Such data is critical if we are to reverse their population declines and enjoy seeing these charismatic predators swim our oceans for the foreseeable future

Silky sharks are found in tropical waters around the world. They are the most abundant shark in the pelagic zone. They are HIGHLY migratory and particularly vulnerable to overfishing. They are slow growing, have lengthy gestation periods, and produce few young
