How did the Billion Oyster Project get started?

The Billion Oyster Project grew out of the New York Harbor School, where students began planting oysters in 2009 as part of their maritime curriculum. In 2014 the Billion Oyster Project became its own restoration and education initiative, which works closely with New York Harbor School and other schools throughout New York City.

Billion Oyster Project was founded by Pete Malinowski and Murray Fisher. Pete is currently the project’s Executive Director, and Murray is Chair of the Board. Pete and Murray’s passion for restoration-through-education and education-through-restoration began at the New York Harbor School, where Murray was Co-founder and Director and Pete taught Aquaculture.

Here are some facts about BILLION OYSTER PROJECT since they launched in 2014...

  • 25 million oysters planted

  • 5 oyster reefs, including 2 community reefs where New Yorkers can volunteer to help monitor the reefs. 6 more reefs coming soon!

  • 3 oyster nurseries

  • 6,000+ local students learning through restoration with Billion Oyster Project’s hands-on curriculum

  • 800,000 pounds of oyster shells diverted from landfills and returned to the harbor, thanks to 60+ participating NYC restaurants

  • 9,000 volunteers engaged in hands-on restoration work
